The District of Barnala

Barnala is the 20th and most recent member of the family of districts in the state of Punjab in northern India. It used to be a part of the district Sangrur but on 19 November 2006, with the establishment of Deputy Commissar’s office in Barnala, it was made into a new district. The district falls in the Malwa region of Punjab and adds another district to the Patiala Division. As per the Census 2001, the Barnala district has a population of 96,397 and the average literacy rate is 65%. Handiaya Bazar, Pharwahi Bazar, Seikha Road, Purana Bazar, College Road, K. C. Road, and Sadar Bazar are the main markets in Barnala. The Barnala Quilla, a fort, is a popular tourist attraction and houses a gurudwara and a Hindu temple in it.
